Sony Corporation, commonly referred to as Sony, is a Japanese Multinational Conglomerate corporation headquartered in Konan Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Its diversified business is primarily focused on the electronics, game, entertainment and financial services sectors. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products for the consumer and

professional markets. Sony is among the worldwide Top 20 Semiconductor Sales Leaders and 3^rd largest television manufacturer in the world.

Sony Corporation was founded in May 7, 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. In 1946, Masaru Ibuka started an electronics shop in a department store building in Tokyo. The company had $530 in capital and a total of eight employees. The next year Masaru Ibuka with Akio Morita founded ‘Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Corporation’. In 1958, the company name was changed to Sony. The name ‘Sony’ was chosen for the brand as a mix of two words. One was the Latin word ‘Sonus’, which was the root of sonic & sound, and the other was ‘Sonny’, a familiar term used in 1950s America to call a boy. Sony played a major role in the development of Japan as a powerful exporter during the 1960s, 1970s & 1980s. It also helped to significantly improve American perceptions of ‘Made in Japan’ products.

Sony Corporation is the world’s 3^rd largest manufacturer of camera, behind Canon & Nikon. Sony’s consolidated headcount as of March 31, 2014 is 140,900 and consolidated sales and operating revenue as of 2013 is 7,767,300 Million Yen.
